On Saturday, October 13, Springfield police arrested two men in connection with a shoplifting incident at Bob’s Store on the west side of Route 22 in Springfield. According to officers the shoplifting was committed earlier in the month on Monday, October 1st. The suspects allegedly utilized wire cutters in order to remove in-store security tags on various inventory.
One of the suspects was a resident of Plainfield, the other of South Plainfield. Both men were charged with shoplifting as well as using an anti-shoplifting countermeasure device. The Plainfield man was also charged with possession of suspected heroin. Both were released pending a court date in Union County Superior Court.
In New Jersey, shoplifting offenses may include: taking merchandise without paying the full retail price; concealing merchandise with the intent to deprive the owner of its full value; altering, transferring, or removing the label or price tag of any merchandise with the intent to deprive the owner of its full value; transferring merchandise from one container to another with the intent of depriving the owner of its full value; under-ringing merchandise; or removing a shopping cart with no intention of returning it.
The penalties for shoplifting are quite serious and will normally depend upon the value of the merchandise taken. Consequences may range from 6 months in prison or a $1,000 fine for less than $200 valued merchandise to up to 5-10 years in prison or $150,000 fine for shoplifting merchandise valued at $75,000 or more.
