New Jersey weapons trafficking initiatives lead to hundreds of arrests

Two new initiatives to seize guns and arrest individuals for weapons trafficking are doing the trick, according to Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa.

The first, the Passaic River Corridor Initiative, is a collaborative effort between the New Jersey State Police, local and county law enforcement agencies and federal authorities. The groups are working to share information about crime patterns across county and other governmental lines.

The second is a collaboration between the State Police and the Division of Criminal Justice to investigate and seize guns in New Jersey’s most violent areas and then prosecute weapon trafficking defendants aggressively. As part of their strategy, the State Police Intelligence Section developed Weapons Trafficking Units and doubled their weapons trafficking investigative force.

The results have been exactly what the Attorney General hoped for: The State Police has seized more than 323 guns just this year, which is nearly triple the amount they seized last year. The Passaic River Corridor Initiative has contributed to more than 405 arrests since May. At least 57 individuals have already been indicted for trafficking guns.

When the government focuses this much effort on finding and prosecuting individuals for criminal activity, defendants can expect a tough battle. Yet, that does not mean they will be convicted for the crimes they allegedly committed. For example, if law enforcement acted unlawfully or the evidence they seized was not handled properly, a defendant may be able to throw out the case entirely or at least reduce the impact of the allegations.
