25 People Arrested at Far Hills Steeplechase

The Far Hills Race Meeting is an extremely popular event held every October in Far Hills, New Jersey at the intersection of Hunterdon, Somerset and Morris counties – three of the wealthiest in the country. The event attracts some 40,000 spectators who take part in watching the races and often tailgate throughout the day. However, in recent years local police have had increasing difficulty with the behavior of some attendees.

This year’s race was held on Saturday, October 20. According to police, there were “25 arrests for violations that ranged from theft and trespassing, to assault, disorderly conduct, public urination and more.” Law enforcement from neighboring towns including Bernardsville, Bernards Township and Bedminster assisted the police department of Far Hills Borough with crowd and traffic control.

The arrests made were almost as diverse as the addresses of those arrested at Saturday’s race, also known as “The Hunt.” Of the 25 reported arrests, there were nine for public urination, ten for disorderly conduct, three for distribution of a controlled dangerous substance, and one for simple assault. Far Hills Police Chief Ken Hartman reported that of the 25 people arrested, five were from New York, two were from California, two from Connecticut, one from Baltimore, Maryland, and the rest were from communities and towns all over New Jersey. Chief Hartman also said of the 25 individuals arrested, 23 were males.

After the race, there were two arrests for driving under the influence in Bernards Township, although police could confirm that these were related to the race. Authorities in Bernardsville issued 37 summonses after the race, mostly for illegal parking. Far Hills has formed a subcommittee to decide what changes need to be made to next year’s event in order to make it safer for spectators and residents alike.

Under N.J.S.A. § 2C:12-1(a)(1), a person commits a simple assault if he or she attempts to cause or purposely, knowingly, or recklessly causes bodily injury to another person. Some examples of this offense include: spitting in someone’s face, hitting someone in order to cause them soreness, or slapping a person’s face. A simple assault conviction can result in a six month prison term. Assault charges are serious. Always discuss your case with an experienced New Jersey criminal lawyer.

In New Jersey, driving while intoxicated (DWI) is a serious offense. A person found to be operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level of 0.08% or above is guilty of DWI in New Jersey. The offense of DWI also applies to a person found to be operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs. This is often referred to as driving under the influence (DUI). Operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated or under the influence of narcotics are both serious motor vehicle offenses that are governed by the same statute in New Jersey, N.J.S.A. 39:4-50. For this reason, anyone charged with the offense of DWI should choose an attorney who is well qualified and experienced in handling DWI cases throughout the State of New Jersey.
